Stories with

Sille Ehlers-Hesse

Life with four daughters moves quickly, and Sille Ehlers-Hesse and her family prioritise slowing down: out in nature, fully present and with time to enjoy each stage before it passes.

Sille lives in Hellerup, just north of Copenhagen, with her partner and their daughters Eva, 6, Salma, 4, and twins Hannah and Paula, who are a year old. Alongside days at home with the twins, she and her friend Josefine run Barnekammer, where they create handmade pieces for family life from deadstock materials. We spoke with Sille about a year of firsts, days out that work for the whole family and the moment a baby becomes a child.

Tell us a little about yourself and your everyday life as a parent.

I'm 32, I have a master's degree in business and communication, and I'm a mother to four girls. Day to day, I'm at home with Hannah and Paula, so my time is filled with playdates (which are mostly coffee dates for me), practical jobs and drop-offs and pick-ups. When there's time, I work on Barnekammer.

What is on your mind at the moment?

Right now, our life is shaped by transitions. After a long summer holiday, the season is changing and each of the girls needs a wardrobe update. For the first time, we have a child starting school, and we've just celebrated the twins' first birthday. So many firsts, and they really show how short and fleeting this time with small children is.

Where do you most like to go with your girls?

I like going to places that are enjoyable for adults too. That way, we’re all more present, which rubs off on the children. With so many of us, we usually end up somewhere that can meet everyone's needs. Often, it's a place where we can experience and learn something, with nature to catch our breath in and room for the two youngest to nap. It might be a farm, the beach or the woods. Quite often it's Frilandsmuseet, the open-air museum outside Copenhagen. We recently visited the home of Knud Rasmussen, the polar explorer and anthropologist. Our big girls are fascinated by him at the moment.

Do you remember your girls' first steps?

Yes. It's always a huge milestone and a proud, sometimes long-awaited moment. In a way, it marks the move from baby to child.

What matters most to you when choosing shoes for the girls?

The older girls have active days at a Steiner school and a forest kindergarten, where they are outdoors in all kinds of weather. So quality, warmth and breathability are essential, with wool and leather as natural favourites. I also love shoes that appeal to children while still being easy on the eyes for us parents. With four kids, time is precious, so I really appreciate fit and sizing that are easy to work out.

What does Bundgaard mean to you?

To me, Bundgaard is solid, high-quality Danish design, made with room to wiggle, grow and follow little feet along the way. I love the classic fits and colours, which turn the big little moments, like first steps, into timeless memories.
